I wonde if it will be possible in a future version to use existing joomla users to authenticate Q2A logins

There is no reason why not. If you like you can do this now yourself using the single sign-on integration:

However this requires PHP coding. I certainly envisage that future versions of Question2Answer will offer integration with popular CMSes like Joomla and Drupal, but I'm afraid this feature won't make it into version 1.0.
