Is Q2A still developed or it has been stopped from being edited with the latest trends? I can see the last release was on 12 Jan 2019. It's been a year we haven't seen a word from the developers.

Hello everyone, here's a little last minute Christmas present! :D I've released a second beta for version 1.8 of Q2A. There are quite a few fixes so I thought it made sense to do another beta. If all goes well then the final release will come very soon in January.

This includes the correct zip file, same as will be on the website when Gideon updates it (not expecting it soon of course, given it's the holiday season). In the future I'll be taking a little more control over the Q2A website and be able to fully release stuff myself in future.

Changelog:

Fixed errors with output buffering and gzip compression.
Fixed non-ANSI group-by queries in MySQL 5.7.
Fixed notices on PHP 7.2.
Fixed points recalculation when converting answers to comments.
Added generic `.qa-post-content` class to replace old `.entry-content` which was removed.
Fixed non-unique cache keys.
Reworked file cache to securely allow cache inside web root.
Fixed issue with PHPMailer's autoloader on PHP 7.2.
Removed (non-functional) clipboard from CKEditor.

And lastly, Merry Christmas and happy holidays to everyone in the Q2A community! Here's to a productive 2018.

How to enable cache in Q2A 1.8 beta 1?

I tried to enable cache in admin section but it says that Cache director is not found? Actually, it's not written anywhere that a cache directory is needed to activate cache and exactly where the directory should be placed? Moreover, what "cache" be the exact name of the directory?

Q2A 1.8 is really nice with many essential features.

While checking, in the question page I'm getting the following error:

Q2A 1.8 - caching beta available

It took me a while but I finally figured out a good caching solution and worked around the various issues. The changes are now on the 1.8 branch on GitHub for anyone that wants to help test it.

Be warned: this is beta code! It may not be suitable for production use on live websites. Also note that if you upgrade from 1.7, you won't be able to downgrade again due to changes in how user passwords and IPs are stored.

But if anyone is able to try it either on localhost or a separate test install on their server, it would be much appreciated. I will be doing some testing on my own server.

To enable caching, the following steps need to be taken:

Make a folder to store the cache files and chmod it to 777. Note: for security reasons the folder must be outside your document root. In other words you must not be able to view cache files in your browser like example.com/cache/123abc456def
Set the QA_CACHE_DIRECTORY constant in qa-config.php to the location you made above (see qa-config-example.php for an explanation).
Go to Admin > Caching and tick "Enable caching".

Currently, question caching only applies for logged-out users. The vast majority of visits to my site were not logged in, I think that will be typical for most sites. The following things are cached:

Question data (answers, comments, etc) for all questions older than 7 days.
Related questions widget
Category widget

There is plenty more that can be cached, such as question lists, users page and tags page, but the above are by far the most common queries.

UPDATE: I've found a small issue with the upgrade queries when using a shared user base (the QA_MYSQL_USERS_PREFIX option). Will fix asap. Now resolved.

V1.6.3 is stable version that has been developed by Q2A founder (Gideon) over the years. New one is glamorous. However, new ones have many issues at the same time. Discard the stable version, what is the reason to use new one in a hurry? I want to hear to users who are using BETA in the public site.

Do you know the meaning of each version
(e.g. ALPHA > BETA > RC (Release Candidate) > Stable)?
Are you properly understand the changes in V1.7?
If you have some problems, can you deal with yourself?
Which changes (features) of V1.7 is necessary for you?
(e.g. mysqli for PHP5.5, bug fix, etc)

For the past few days Q2A has been acting pretty slow. (this site). I am guessing it is because of the 1.3 beta 2 and it using CURL for the facebook logins?

In anycase, tonight i accessed the site and it is lighting faast!!!
Hopefully the issues with CURL are fixed?

Also, what is in store for Beta 3 of 1.3?

Upgrade from 1.3 B1 to 1.3 Beta 2 hangs, so does fresh install...

when doing either an upgrade or a fresh install of Q2A 1.3b2 it hangs when trying to update or create database tables, i have tried it both ways.

It does not give me an error, just sticks on the same page.

I have tried enabling short tags in my php.ini file but am not sure if they are working correctly. Last time on beta one this was an error in the facebook plugin php page. I am wondering if its the same type of php error but instead with a different script?

Please advise

New CSS classes in V1.2b1?

Hey Gidgreen, wonder what new CSS classes you added and ones you modified in version 1.2 CSS as i seem to be encountering some problems with my theme.

Just a future suggestion, you should probably note what changes are in CSS too in the release notes as it will make it much easier for theme developers, Thanks!
