Q2A running in Docker hosted on AWS. How can I send mail to users?

I've got Q2A running in a Docker container on an AWS EC2 instance. What additional work needs to be done past a base install in order to send mail to users? For example, if I want users to confirm their email before being able to make posts. I do not need the site to receive any emails, just the ability to send (please correct me if this is not the case)

I know there is an Emails section of the Admin page, but I feel like I am missing some SMTP server installation or something, as none of my changes on that page seem to make a difference.

When I send a test message to myself from Admin/Mailing, the page simply states "A server error occurred - please try again."

Do I need to install an SMTP server on my AWS instance to handle outgoing mail? Am I missing some part of the installation?

UPDATE: The container in which Q2A was hosted did not have the `sendmail` program installed. After installing, I no longer get the aforementioned "A server error has occurred," however now the page just hangs when I click "Send test to me." After a while, it claims to have sent a test message to my email, but I receive no email in any folders.

Still not sure what to do here...

I configured the site and it worked fine on version PHP 5.5

Mail was sent and recaptcha worked.

Send email via SMTP instead of local mail

SMTP server port 465

Send SMTP username and password

Then I changed the server version to PHP 5.6 and everything broke.

Recaptcha does not work:

Then I changed the server version back to PHP 5.5 and everything started working again.

For other sites I need to upgrade the server version to 7, I think everything will break again.

How to solve a problem?

I have installed Q2A in a local VM machine.I am using Centos.I haven't done any additional configuration for email.

I have tried sending without SMTP settings and also tried by configuring SMTP settings in UI.I haven't made any changes/configurations in the machine for sending mail.

I am getting "An error occured trying to send a mail".

Can anyone help me on how to configure SMTP mail in Q2A?I am very new to this.I searched online,couldn't find any help to configure the mail.

A very important note for all that use SMTP as mailing option instead of PHP.

You will run into erros when using the newsletter mailing:

PHP Question2Answer email send error: SMTP Error: The following recipients failed: mail@example.de: Limit of 250 e-mails per hour exceeded, please try again in 60min. or contact your support.

Hundreds of such errors in my error log file...

I guess the only fix is to contact the hosting provider!

Or changing the settings of your server.

Just saw that the emails sent by my website are shown in GMAIL as non-encrypted.

Now I am wondering how to get this done by PHPMailer - without using SMTP.

Or is SMTP the only way? (I tried once to set it up, but somehow failed.)

Found this error in my error logs:

It derives from the class.phpmailer.php:

}

It happened when I did a mass-mailing from the admin panel.

But checking my users, there are none that have empty email addresses. What could be the reason?

I would add a flag so we can use HTML too:

Furthermore I would use instead a plain URL: $unsubscribeurl a link so HTML can be used.

Seems that the $html flag would decide about the body unsubscribe link.

Idea for q2a v1.8: Save Newsletters in DB

Using newsletter mailings more and more, I think it would be great to save all newsletters that are sent out.

This feature should probably implemented in the existing core functionality.

This way users can also access "old" newsletters. And it could be seen as kind of news blog.

There is already a mass mailing feature in Q2A.
But if the admin wants to send mail to all its moderators or editors or experts or registered users then there is no such way. It would be awesome if we can send mails to any of those type of users from that mailing section in admin.

I am currently developing a plugin that sends out questions from yesterday to users that have tags of those questions favorited.

In a foreach() I am directly calling:

From q2a core mass mailing I have seen that gidgreen implemented kind of mail buffer which sends out emails step by step (bunch of 100 or so).

Questions:

1. Do I have to do the same buffer mailing?

Currently I have only 150 users in the forum. What if I would have 15000?

2. Can I just stick to qa_send_email() without any concerns?

Would be nice if somebody can give advice for me and the others!

I am not getting e-mail notifications sent out. After examing the script code I found the PHPMailer class and the qa_send_email function.

In the function I saw the code access qa_opt('smtp_active'). So I went to the qa_options DB table and found the row. The value was empty. So I took a shot and set it to "1".

I then added a row for 'smtp_address" and 'smtp_port' as the function sets that as the Host and Port of the PHPMailer object.

But I get no mail. I also found three .ini files that reference SMTP and smtp_port. I set the values to my smtp server and port.

Still no e-mail notification, even if I restart the services.

So exactly what do I do to configure e-mail notifications?
