About: How to Get Started
The first step in creating a strong thesis statement is understanding the objective of your essay. Is it informative? Persuasive? Entertaining? Once you understand your purpose for writing, then you can begin to think about the topic and questions you need answered to learn more about this topic. What do you think you might find during your research process? Your thesis can change as you learn new information, so do not feel like you have to manipulate your findings to fit a pre-conceived idea.

Something else to consider is whether or not your topic is assigned. If you have been given a topic, turn that topic into a question. Once you find the answer, a brief statement of that will be your thesis. For example, if your topic is to explain to another student how to organize an essay, you might turn that into the question, “How do you organize an essay?” Your actual thesis would answer this question. One example could be “When organizing an essay, the writer should include an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.” Remember to keep it simple and concise.

If your topic is not assigned, then it will be up to you to come up with a viable topic and then turn that topic into a question. Make sure your topic is not too broad or too narrow. If it is one or the other, it will be hard to write a quality thesis. Brainstorming by coming up with questions to answer will help you determine your specific topic.

What to Avoid
Of course, there are always exceptions to every “rule”, but in general try to avoid beginning your essay with, “In this paper I am going to tell you about X, X, and X.” Skip that and go straight to what you will be talking about.
