Upgrading question

I just did a upgrade from 186 to 188 There was no option that popped up about upgrading the data base and stats say i am running 1.88 is there a place I need to go to update the date base also what is the qa-external-example suppose to be for as there is no other folder with that name and is it ok to delete the extra example files?

Not every version has a database upgrade. 1.8.6 to 1.8.8 is mainly compatibility updates for PHP 8 plus some bug fixes. So only the code needs updating.
