First of all, thank you for a wonderful product!  Just installed and moved over our Q&A support section to the website and it seems to look and function wonderfully, even though we're an IIS/MVC/ASP.NET shop.

I'd love to incorporate a "popular tags" sidebar.  I've seen some examples here of folks doing it, but I'm not a PHP expert (at all) and the examples seem to have been referring to v1.2 of the product and are somewhat disconnected.

Does anyone have a simple step-by-step instructions with code that we could use to implement a tags sidebar?

You can download the 1.4 developer preview which has this integrated!
