It seems that the point system is only transparent to the admin (/admin/points).

I recommend making it public by default, how else should the users understand how they gain points? For instance, for this forum we could use: http://www.question2answer.org/qa/points

For my q2a forums I always set up a separate custom page to show the available points, e.g. http://www.klaustukai.lt/points

What do you think?

I have developed a plugin called q2apro-userstatistics that helps with that issue: https://github.com/q2apro/q2apro-userstatistics

Not only the point system should be transparent to all users, but it also have to be explained to them. If we look at stack exchange, it's a great force they have to motivate the community.

If the point system isn't understandable, users may get suspicious about the intentions carried by the Q&A site.

We* are going to implement a Q&A site for botany, so we will have a community with an important part of scientists.

At the first presentation of the Q&A site project, they have been some suspicions about the point system. For exemple it was pointed out as a selfish way of promotion (!) ...

So explenations and transparency are not only relevant but in fact a fundamental issue in our case.

* "we" is here meant as the Tela Botanica french speaking network of botanists.

This is well put, an important extra argument.

I hope we soon will have an automatically created page showing the points (@Scott).

If you need to show the complete point system to all the users, then I would suggest you to use FAQ Page plugin by NoahY. The plugin has a question where it shows the complete point system to all the users. Get this plugin from the link below. Maybe this would help you.
