how to restrict new tags creation and force the users to use pre-defined tags for raising the question

One solution would be to use categories, which are essentially the same as predefined tags.

My Tagging Tools plugin may help with the first point, for v1.4+. You can prevent users below a certain number of points from creating new tags. If you set the points really high it would apply to everyone.

This will be possible in Q2A 1.5 using a filter module in a plugin. This seems to be a common request so perhaps someone will develop this plugin soon!

I am looking at creating a taxonomy plugin that allows for an additional method of categorizing questions/threads. I never liked tags since, unless everyone using the system takes time and deliberation to use properly, they are a total waste and mess. So how many sites do I see with 30 pages of "top tags" that will never be browsed? :) Would like to do an advanced search that allows cross searching on category plus the additional field.
by
What would a taxonomy system do? I'm not familiar with the term.
by
Google is your friend. :)
by
Well I certainly did that first (and I should have said I did instead of saying I'm unfamiliar with the term), but I found answers like "gives your sites use of the organizational keywords known in other systems as categories, tags, or metadata." So I'm really not clear what it is and how it would improve over the current system, but I'm very interested to know.

That's exactly what it is - a system that allows people to identify content. Using categories is one way to identify content as belonging to a certain topic, tags is another, etc. For me, I'd like the ability to categorize content using different methods than just the category and tagging system here. I'd rather have two completely unrelated sets of categories (e.g. car brand and place of manufacture) each which can be used independently when a poster creates a question/post.
by
How is having two sets of unrelated categories different from having two tags? I don't mean the question sarcastically. I honestly don't understand the difference. Thanks for explaining.
by
Categories - a dropdown list consisted of a limited number of choices that a user can choose to classify the data.

Tags - a text field with an unlimited number of choices that a user can choose to classify the data

IMHO, tags are a total waste of time for anything other than the database or wiki of a very small number of people.

Gideon - has this filter module been created? This is like the "prefix" that you see in many places and also acts as a separate taxonomy. Funny that I commented on this issue almost 2 years ago!

Try the Tagging Tools plugin by Scott: https://github.com/svivian/q2a-tagging-tools

Thanks - I took a look at this. I guess now thinking about it again, with some template modding it could work. Ideally going forward there should be a better way of handling this, e.g. a dropdown list, etc. I'll have to let users know the different tag options they could use or they will be guessing what options they have. Thanks!

This is still not working. I have setup the plugin but all new user can create new plugin without any error.

Any update when this plugin "Minimum reputation" option will be fixed
