expand all categories in widget

I'd like to expand all categories in the widget. Is that possible? If not, is there any API that would retrieve all categories and save them in a tree-like structure that I can use?

I'd also like to do that. Otherwise sub-categories are hidden and there is no clue on whether they even exist.
